Umm... there's a specific reason why the thermometer reads higher when under cover (think along the lines of "radiation" or radiant heat/energy, and I'm not talking about the house or patio)...
First person to explains it wins... (Hint: Think Thermodynamics)...
I'll give a second hint if noone gets it soon... (A "google-able" hint, is that a word?)...
