Nettie - moving messages to another folder doesn't "free up" your total message count. It just makes them more organised.
The way I use it is just as you had intended - i.e. create a new folder ("June" for instance) and move "important" messages to that folder during the course of the month, getting them out of the current "inbox". At the end of the month I'd simply go to the June folder, select everything and write it to a CSV file. Once I'd downloaded that I'd just clear the June folder - claiming my space back in the process.
