Actually, Phil it is really the sensitivity of the Canon CMos to Red light and in particular HA light that makes them more attractive. The low noise is both present in the Canons and the Nikon D70.
I think that you will find that on CN, there are quite a few Astrophotographers that own and use D70's for their DSO work. There are some features that the Canons don't have that the D70 does have, like Bulb setting.
That said though, Canon images do have a richer colour due to its sensitivity, The DA and rebel series are purpose built also for astrowork.
