Yeah I know what you're saying. I know what's happening now. If you check here and look at the overall picture you'll see the sky gets very dark as you get away from the nebulosity but the overall intensity around the center is still pretty high because of all the whispy stuff but for the dark nebulae. So by cropping in the light areas everything looks bright as a result. I guess the histogram should be tweaked differently for close ups.
