It could just be mankinds' over-inflated sense of self to assume that we can actually do something that will destroy the world, just like a hydrogen bomb was meant to ignite the entire atmosphere.

A similar argument can ben advanced against global warming being a real phenomena - mankind assumes they are responsible for the recent variations in climate - hasn't it been varying over the millions of years already (eg. ice ages)?
