The hoaxers make it difficult. Even if 0.001 percent was unexplained it would be interesting to get to the bottom of the few real cases.
Think of it like this. Imagine if for every single true astronomy report there were 1000 fake, hoax and misleading reports. Something like that stupid Mars email thing times 1000! Where would astronomy be then? Even ONE bad report like that totally messes up most of the uninformed general public.
I've been exploring various aspects of the supernatural/paranormal, which has the same problem. It seems to attract lunatics and hoaxers like flies to rotten meat. Sifting through the balony takes some reading, careful thought, and sometimes preconceived ideas need a rethink!
