A mate of mine used to work on PAs and told me that 'back in the day' they couldn't us wedges across the front of the stage for foldback (too many punters jumping up on stage) so all the foldback was side-fill. Basically they had three 'front of house'-sized rigs. One pointed out to the audience (and naturally was bloody loud) and the other two - equally loud - were on either side of the stage pointing at the band.

Anyone remember the John Watts album called 'Going deaf for a living'
