I, and about a squillion other people saw the same thing over Zion NP in the US about 10 years ago.
According to the park ranger, who rang up the weather people who presumably called whoever they call etc, etc, Its
probably caused by a "raindrop" of cold air from higher in the atmosphere, though the exact physics are unknown.
Interesting, to be sure, but not as cool as a UFO.
