Depends what camera you have - I just use a Panasonic FZ28 for most of my photos, and it has a burst mode at the back, with self timer button.
On my Canon, it is also on the back in the timer area - single shot, continuous shooting, or self timer.
Great advice there from Steve. I usually leave everything in auto, but if you want great shots, you need to do all that tricky stuff, which I'm not very good at.
