You've captured some great action here Warren.
Not knowing your camera or settings has me at a bit of a disadvantage to give constructive advice. If I were shooting this with a DSLR I would either shoot manual and meter the birds or shoot in AV and spot meter the birds. I would also adjust ISO and focal ratio with the aim of getting the shutter speed in excess of 1/2000th sec. For fast action I prefer 1/3200 sec. plus. to aid in freezing the wings.
The birds were not making things easy by keeping their backs to you. Please give more gear and settings info and maybe I can add some more thoughts.
