Don't know about the expert bit, but what you are seeing called a gradient. I can be due to light pollution, the moon, or the sun coming up! Flats will not correct it. Flats are for correcting illumination problems within the optical system.

You need a gradient remover, like Russell Crowman's Gradient Exterminator, or the new ABE from Carlos Milovic.
