My wife and I were watching the 2001 movie, Heartbreakers when all of sudden Jennifer Love Hewitt (JLW) stumbles upon her boyfriend looking at stars through a refractor on the beach. She thought he was spying on somebody only to be told that he's photographing the stars (no camera in the scene though!). Then Jason Lee lets her see the Crab Nebula and M13. She remarks "why would you want to look at that stuff". Then later, when he gives her a ring which turns out to be a meteorite ring she remarks "why can't you be normal like other people?". Well, the relationship improved from that point, but we turned off the movie anyway. I snagged my wife with a view through the telescope and gave her a meteorite ring. She loved it.
But the message came through clear...young girls think amateur astronomers are wierd geeks.
