Pioneers generally go to places they suspect are less civilised or less well developed, and are therefore hopefully more amenable to exploitation. A bit of a waste of time and effort if you spend squillions developing the technology to travel the universe, and without researching first, you land on the first place you come across - and they kick crap out of you cos they're way more advanced with the light sabres and stuff.
Best sticking with people and civilisations way down the ladder if poss'
