The Fahrenheit scale was invented in 1724 and the Centigrade (aka Celsius) in 1742 and the thermometers worked pretty well. The first thermometers date from the 11th Century, but were not that good. Once they got the idea of sealed thermometers around the mid 1600's, accuracy became quite good. (Do a google with key words like "thermometer", "invention", "accuracy" etc)
