I think a lot of newbies like the idea of an eq mounted scope because it 'looks cool' and techo compared to a dob which looks like a pivoting water heater or rubbish bin.
The truth of the matter is that with a dob so much a greater part of the cost goes into the optics. With a small budget going for an eq mounted scope, you are making big performance comprimises both mechanically and optically.
