Yes Bert, the external aperature stop is a great idia as you suggested, it blocks any unwanted light from entering the lens rather than stopping it at the iris after it has passed through the optical elements.
Yes that is indeed IC 423, I hope to re image that area but recomposed to better show those faint blue blobs
If ever I can get to a dark site the lens will be the "weapon of choice" for widefield imaging to a much fainter level.
