This is a fault directly resulting from the selectors. Having a batsman as captain? Not a bad move but there is better. A bowling batsman, not strictly an allrounder, like Waugh or Border. They knew their stuff.
Ponting is pure batsman.
He will take batting first up every time. A bowler knows when to field first and is more inclined to recognise the time to field first.
I don't know weather Ponting looks to the team for decision input. Border did. Waugh was a natural, full of confidence. Much like Ian Chappell.
