I recently imaged the tarantula at F/4.8, and got a fair few dark nebulae that I had to confirm with other images... It was 12x10min subs and I'd not seen the dark dusty spot in other images... I dare say what you've captured at F/1.8 is the same stuff, just probably a lot more extended..
I'll probably attack Orion this season.. I've been avoiding it, but I'll probably do it.. If I do, I'll shoot a bunch of 20min subs at F/4.8 and see if I can catch the same amount of light in 2 hours as you got in 20 mins...
