edit: have you considered one of the free star charts that you can download and printing and binding it yourself?
Thanks for the replies everyone. Yes Dave, I printed off one of JR Torres' atlases to A3 at work. It took forever - huge!! Uranometria for the southern hemisphere might be the go, especially if someone in the family is getting it for me as a present.
