I'll go against the trend here and say get your mate to buy it O/S.
My estimates is the saviings is around $80AU.
I've bought small items O/S including eyepieces etc with no issues at all.
In fact I regularly have things shipped to a hotel awaiting collection and no problems encountered to date.
As for GST when returning back - again never had issues.
Obviously if someone wasn't bringing it back and it was being shipped, then the savings are neglible.
I'm not trying to sound disloyal, but your not under any obligation to buy local.
