UPDATE:- My Credit Union tells me that it is the banks "trying it on!" They receive electronic transfer of funds from all banks every day. I know that my pay is deposited into my Credit Union account, for example.
The only suggestion that could be made apart from "don't accept their excuses" was that the account numbers for my Credit Union are relatively short - five numerals. So padding that out with an extra four zeros before the number may help with online transactions.
Any that's it. Rather unsatisfactory - but welcome to the competitive corporate world, it would seem.
