Thanks guys. Not sure of the correct way of doing it, but I went to channels, right clicked on red channel, duplicated into a new image. It ended up in an alpha layer of a multichannel image. Had to change the mode from multichannel to grayscale, then to rgb 8 bit so I could save as sRGB for web. Reposted in #1 above.
