G'day space geek, once you get used to seeing nebulas and the like you will start to make out more detail. When ever these objects are above the horizon go back to them enjoy the sight and study them. You will be suprised at the detail you can discern.
You may want to try one of my favorite nebulas next M17 in Sagittarius better known as the swan neb (or the geeky name the omega neb

). If you want to bag ya first planetery neb check out M27, the dumbell neb in Vulpecula. And a couple of Globs M22 in Sagittarius and NGC6752 in Pavo.
