Once you have cataract surgery your eyes become "fixed focus" somewhere between here and there ( about mid-distance). I have heard that variable implants are on the way.
Unfortunately my astigmatism problem means glasses on all the time. However, I find I can happily look through an e.p. without them. Probably can't see the stars etc quite as sharp as I would like, but then, I can see them!
