Well as there was an Impact Star Party provided by the generosity of Dan Gray and his phenomenal home built 28 inch String Telescope at the inner city location of Portland Oregon on the Willamette River with a high resolution video feed and digital recording, just in case I could not see the event through my 10.1 inch Dobsonian, I had to stay up till 3:30 AM PDT and go.
We thought we saw the event but perhaps we were viewing the wrong crater as Dan’s video monitor showed what looked like a bright plume with shadowed side and it evolved and several of us agreed that we witnessed it to evolve and change in appearance; I confirmed seeing it in my 10 inch Dobsonian at 200X magnification as others did in their large telescopes nearby. It seemed to last for many minutes.
Then someone looked up a NASA site to check the crater images for reference. We were looking to the east of Cabeus, another adjacent crater but could swear there was a three dimensional plume. Is it possible that NASA hit the wrong crater? I did a quick field sketch over the earlier sketch I made form the NASA site photos. Then worked up this later large 19 X 25” pastel on black Strathmore Artagain pastel paper later at home this morning to indicate in detail what I observed through the eyepiece and Dan’s video monitor. *Other reference photos are linked within this post.
