thats because its a variegated fairy-wren Dennis, not the much more common (in s/e corner of oz) superb fairy-wren I am still to clearly identify one myself! even though they are supposed to be very common!!?? the superbs dominate everywhere i go.. and it gets extra confusing when the male superbs are in in all those weird transition morphs from breeding to non-breeding colours half the time!

and according to one distribution map i have (simpson and day) they arent supposed to be in your corner of the world Dave! awesome! lol

they are amazing crisp and colourful images! you're the man ving!

firetails (red-browed finch) are very common round here, usually in flocks in summer, after breeding, but dont sit still much for closer observation, and tend to like the shade (like a lot of birds) you really need the sun on them/right light to see those brilliant reds well, they can look quite plain without illumination,
