thats because its a variegated fairy-wren Dennis, not the much more common (in s/e corner of oz) superb fairy-wren
I am still to clearly identify one myself! even though they are supposed to be very common!!?? the superbs dominate everywhere i go.. and it gets extra confusing when the male superbs are in in all those weird transition morphs from breeding to non-breeding colours half the time!
and according to one distribution map i have (simpson and day) they arent supposed to be in your corner of the world Dave! awesome! lol

firetails (red-browed finch) are very common round here, usually in flocks in summer, after breeding, but dont sit still much for closer observation, and tend to like the shade (like a lot of birds) you really need the sun on them/right light to see those brilliant reds well, they can look quite plain without illumination,
