Forget the usual BBC drivel. The original source is the ESA at; http://www.esa.int/SPECIALS/Herschel/SEMUABGNA0G_0.html or
Read the article in depth at;
http://sci.esa.int/science-e/www/obj...objectid=45627

Best still there are many great related articles attached to these great links above.

If you need to know more, just visit the Herschel Science Centre http://herschel.esac.esa.int/operations_log.shtml
(I found the HSC Operation (B)log really interesting.)

As for numbskull Johnthan Amos, his knowledge of "Herschel", let alone and his portrayal of the observations, is just ludicrous. He talks about the mission but says virtually nothing of these first observations! I.e. It it not just an image of "...cold gas that are collapsing in on themselves to form new stars." but as the ESA says "Interstellar material appears to be condensing in a continuous and interconnected maze of filaments and strings of newly-forming stars in all stages of development.
The observations yield additional information about this cold material - such as how much there is, its mass, temperature and composition, and whether or not some of it is collapsing to form new stars.
."

The difference in the science understood by this dipstick is plainly obvious!!

BAN this Nonsense
BBC Science Site
from IceInSpace
