I think it's a glitch. A very offensive glitch
It seems odd to me that an object that obvious hasn't officially been catalogued and found in mainstream lore. I mean if it was a DSO of some description we'd know about it. Glitches are quite common in DSS images, just have a browse of sky-map.org and you'll see what I mean.
