Hmmm sounds counter-intuative...
You are correct that going with a faster ISO will expose the moon faster, but it will also expose the stars faster as well. You might not have seen them because they didn't trail enough at the faster shutter speed.

Different cameras respond to ISO settings differently - give it a whirl at ISO 400 or 800 if 1600 didn't work well.
