I've had a NavMan S90i for a nearly 2 years, and it worked well, and prior to that the Navman Pin300 (ie basically a pocketpc with integrated GPS). I always liked their software better than the alternatives, but things change quickly and I never really compared more recently. Lots of people swear by the TomTom's, not that many fanatics for the NavMans.
One thing to think about, is that the NavMan units have the SUNA traffic updates (depending on where you live this might be useful), as it will route you around accidents and other traffic hazzards). My new unit has support for it. I'm not sure if the TomTom's have got this yet, but if not, can't be far away.
I just got a new car (old one got written off when someone hit me), and I'm putting in a new in-dash unit on Thursday (Pioneer AVIC-F10BT).
Basically, got over the tangle of wires, and the basic stereo in the car was OK, but not very feature packed. If that's what you mean by in-car (vs portable units), let me know and I'll post my thoughts after I get it installed. Saying that, it's not a cheap option compared to the portable units.
