Firmware updates are a crapshoot. If it works, great. If it doesn't, the machine may be permanently trashed.
Here's an important lesson:
If it ain't broke, don't fix it. If the machine has a manufacturing defect that can only be resolved with an update, then the choice is clear. If the machine works fine then there is no need to update.
