I'm not sure what you mean by "involved". I started using them as an alternate call out / comms / chat system for search and rescue and across all the emergency services, and we use them at work.
I'm not so involved with rescue any more but I run a UHF base station at home, + one in the truck and we have a few handhelds for when the girls go out horse riding in the forest, etc.
I don't have an AM or SSB though.
