Hi Mac,
Possums are native to Australia. Not endangered but protected. Introduced to NZ. Consequently a non native pest.
No natural predators to keep the population under control. That is why possums in NZ are often weak and mangy.
In Aust. Owls, dingoes, pythons and goannas eliminate the unhealthy members.
