Be cautious in using these digital compasses. They do suffer from a margin of error - usually in excess of their published rate. This is exacerbated when the compass is being used in near proximity to ferrous metals: some mounts have more steel than aluminium in them, some scopes have a certain amount of steel , piers almost always and many observatories have some degree of steel framing. In practice, I have found my compass to be as much as 20 degrees off if I am too close to something ferrous.
