Ah well you do need a decent camera and skies as well unfortunately
I had an interesting time tracking RS Oph spectra down to mag 12 with a modded webcam a few years back

Spectroscopy on classical novae is cheating slightly though as they become way brighter at H alpha compared with what the V mag says
