I have the 1000d and I have found that if I shoot directly from live view I get a similar red patch. I personally think it is not a thermal problem from live view, but a read issue.
I did some experimenting and I found that If I switch off live view, even for a fraction of a second then start and exposure I get NONE of the red blob. If I shoot from live view it is always there (in exposures over 5 seconds). So for my camera I dont think it from heat building over time in the sensor.
