jjj sounds like you may have the DIR300. If so read on...

The Dlink DIR300 has a WAN/Internet port, that's the port you connect to the satellite.

It sounds like the satellite device is a modem/router.

Once the Dlink is connected to the satellite via the Dlink WAN port plug in the ethernet port.

Make sue your lappy ethernet I/F is set to automatically obtain an IP address.

You should then be able to browse the Dlink by typing the default IP address (usually 192.168.0.1) in internet exploder (or firefox if you're that way inclined). You should then have access to the Dlink admin menu. From memory the user is admin the password is blank (no password)

Once you're in to the admin menu you'll find there's a wizard that should allow you to set the modem up (the cable option should be close to what you need, if not set the unit to obtain an IP address automatically) and configure the wireless settings.

Make sure the wireless is turned on in the router (there's also a wizard for the wireless area), and make sure that the unit has an SSID. Your laptop, if the wireless is turned on, should have an option to view available networks.
You should be able to select and connect to your Dlink wireless and once connected the lan cable is no longer necessary. Once you have the wireless connection working go back in to the router setup and set some security (just about anything will do WEP is the easiest but least secure), WPA or WPA2 will be more secure, you will need to specify a key or passphrase. You won't have to worry about the setup for security on the lappy it should simply prompt you for a passphrase when you connect.

Sounds a lot more complex than it really is, have a crack at it.
