Hi David you're absolutely right! The scope was owned by my great grandfather, a retired ship's captain who used it to watch shipping from his front porch overlooking the port at Ardrossan in SA. However it also has a an eye piece which is a sun filter - maybe for watching eclipses while at sea?? It has never had a tripod but is almost impossible to hold steady. I'm hoping to find something consistent with its era. I have seen tripods with a circular mount that the scope could fit into. They seem to be hard to find tho - still looking! Thanks alot. Judith
