Pentax XW5 XW SMC 5mm Eyepiece $450.00
Pentax XW3.5 XW SMC 3.5mm Eyepiece $450.00
Pentax XW7 XW SMC 7mm Eyepiece $749.00
Notice that 7mm is between 10 and 5 mm, both of them cost less than 7 mm?? Whats the reason? If other company sell them for the same price as 10 mm, why here it cost so much? Doesn't make sense.
Now, tell me whats so special about XW 7mm to be priced as 2" and even more??:
Pentax XW20 XW SMC 20mm Eyepiece $749.00
Pentax XW30 XW SMC 30mm 2" Eyepiece $719.00
Pentax XW40 XW SMC 40mm 2" Eyepiece $719.00
Kokusai Kohki sells 5, 7, 10, 14, 20 mm XW's for the same price: 31,200 Yen.
cheers

While I most certainly do not know (I don't work for Pentax), I would speculate that the reason is currency exchange and when the product was purchased by the distributor. Especially seeing all of the prices listed like that.
If you look at currency rates AUD$ - Yen based on the interbank rate (credit card rates are different) in the last 188 days we've seens:
The high 1 AUD$ = 80.438 yen
The low 1 AUD$ = 55.535 yen
The USD$ has been even more volatile against both currencies...
I would not be surprised if a distributor transaction with Pentax required two conversions (Yen to US$ to AUD$)...The reason I speculate this is that many "global goods" are priced in terms of USD$ for the terms of the agreement. When I used to inport "Stellar Seats" I had to buy the product in USD$ (they came from Japan) and then convert it to AUD$.
Just using the above Japanese prices would give you the folowing gap in price just changing currency once (Yen to AUD$)...
Starting at 31,200 as a base...
At the High exchange rate you get $387.87 as a price then add GST = 426.66
At the Low exchange rate you get $561.81 then add GST = 617.99
A difference of $191.33 so currency could account for almost $200 of the difference...if the stock was older than 188 days it might be even more dramatic...and if the transaction had to go through USD$ at some point the remaing difference could easily be related to that conversion.
While again I don't know with certainty why there is the price difference but I suspect it has to do with cost of stock in someone's inventory (could be retailer could be distributor)...Hope that helps...
