That is nothing short of vandalism. There are laws against fixing objects to trees. Sorry but I teach horticuture and this sort of :4 lettered expletive: really &^*(&^^()&^* gets me angry. Not only that it is a danger to whoever has to remover the tree eventually. The bark grows over the screws and they then make a lovely OH&S hazard for any chainsaw user. What a bunch of .......wallys.
