A Tree Falls In The Forest Does...

Hi All,

The scenario: Coffee after breakfast on the back deck. The back fence is 80m away. Not a breath of wind. Clear blue sky and the sun feels warm. Winter in Queensland, wonderful.

A cracking noise emanates from near the back fence. Within a few seconds the cracking culminates with a loud CRACK , followed by an almighty Boom..

On the way to the site I suspected it must be the old gum in the neighbour's yard, about a metre from the fence.

Damn thing fell staight into my pumpkin patch. (Smashin' Pumpkins Anyone?)

It was a big tree, Bloodwood. The next day I strode down to the fence, to take some pics but the neighbour, Russell, had already chainsawed half of it.

The tree died about 25 yrs ago. Its been standing giving possums and cockatoos a home in its hollows.
We are now enjoying much heat from our slow combustion heater.

If no one is there to hear it, does a falling tree make a noise?
Cheers Marty
