Here is a sketch of the two ball universal coupler. I suppose you could make a 1 ball but then you have to make a hinge on the one side.
The tube in the original pic is fiberglass, as is the scope's single truss. It is very strong and very light. It is cast around alunminium tubing (which is used as the joiner, allowing focusing.
The balls and plates are brass. The balls turned on a lathe.
Try and make it. It's cheaper and YOU will have made it!
