A day at Franz Josef

We walked a few hours up to the Franz Josef glacier today.

Really interesting scenery and a lovely stroll along the river bed.

The glacier is worth a look if you're ever travelling up the west coast of NZ.

It amazes me it even exists when the air temp was really very mild. I guess it would take a long time to melt such a large ice cube!!

What really surprised me was to learn the glacier is currently advancing, and faster than the average of other glaciers around the world. It's quite a dynamic chuck of ice.

I snapped an overall view, as well as a closer shot of an opening/cave at the glacier face which has been created by flowing water.

There's also an image of a rock wall found further down the river bed which I thought looked pretty cool.

Cheers.
