Stacked rocks at Bruce Bay

Driving to the Fox and Franz Josef glaciers today we passed through this little place called Bruce Bay.

The area was quite pretty, despite the almost constant rain...but what really caught us by surprise was the sudden appearance on the roadside of hundreds of man-made little rock 'towers' .

These stacked towers are built atop the natural rock wall, which runs quite a few hundred metres.

The practice is apparently known as 'lith making'.

It boggled my mind to think how many of these stacks were there...and how long this had been going on? They appear to be completely untouched after being finished by their creators.

Strangely, we found ourselves gathering rocks and contributing our own 'liths'. It's almost impossible to stand there and not want to make your own little mark...in the middle of nowhere!

Very cool.
