According to the producer, she was introduced to appeal to the younger girls. In Dr. Who, the female companion grows in a particular way - seemingly as the naive investigator to transform into the Doctor's perspective of the universe. Now it seems his companion has to be both sexier and "equal" in some intellectual way to the Doctor himself - one whose very own experiences is clearly vastly outstrips and is superior (in a totally non-sexist way) Most of the "companions" are turned to his point of view.
Sources seem to be saying this will be changes to appeal to "
...a newer, more modern audience.". (This is why the 11th Doctor Who selected is 22 years old - the youngest so far!)
I do agree, however, we should see what they do.
Looking forward to it, and I hope you're also right.
