In 1918 a very virulent, but otherwise mild strain of flu broke out and travelled around the globe. It later mutated and swept around the world again, this time taking some 50million plus lives with it (more than all that died in WWI).

There are already strains existing in the wild with resistance to current drugs like tamiflu and relenza. All it takes is for one person or animal to get infected with two strains simultaneously, and bingo a deadly mutated strain can emerge that may be unstoppable.

Now if that happened and we weren't taking the control measures being taken now, everybody would be screaming "Why didnt the government do something!".

If nothing terrible happens be grateful for the luxury of being able to scoff at the paranoia in safety.
