Basically, knowledge in more recent years, says it is a real possibility. The true "acceleration of evolution" is not known, as is the true origin of RNA. Protein manufacture is the key with immunity to resist germs, as with the article that appeared in
Science Daily "

Weaknesses in species could not only be natural selection or environment; but viral infections causing biological catastrophe - followed by rapid periods of evolution. (far too detailed here to discuss I think!)
