Hi Stephen,
To have any idea at all when trying to identify something you need co-ordinates. If you have an atlas or ephemeris or even print out charts from some of the many available sources on the net.
When you want to image something star hop to the object so there is at least one star in your image that you have the RA and Dec for from your chart, then you will be able to identify any fuzzies in the field that you image.
