Hey, it works both ways. If they detect these subtle footprints in the CMB, it supports the existence of gravitational waves. The next step would be to find if the elusive graviton exists and whether it affects light over larger distances i.e. magnifying the red shift. Just maybe the perception of an accelerating expansion is an illusion and dark energy is a myth.
