The new version isn't as dramatic as the original but of course the special effects are more modern. I liked the switch from the nuclear issues to the environmental ones. I thought Keanu Reeves played the alien as a detached observer quite well. However, the reasoning behind his change of mind was not developed seriously enough and the ending seemed abrupt. John Cleese's role was too brief.
Overall, enjoyable but needed to have more depth.
